BWSS Safety Changes Everything

Workout for Women’s Day

Thank you so much for helping keep BWSS on the frontline to end gender-based violence 24/7/365!

Workout for Women’s Day 2022

When you work out this Women’s Day 100% of the funds raised go directly to fund our Crisis Line.

Victims of intimate partner, domestic, and sexualized violence become survivors when they have access to crisis intervention by trained and supervised crisis workers. BWSS has been a “first response” for 43 years.

Since 2020, violence against women and gender-based violence has increased to the point that in January 2022 a woman was killed every other day, a grim and appalling escalation, actually.

So at BWSS, we stay on the frontline 24/7, and calls to our crisis line increased from 18,000 to 32,000 in 2020.

As a first response, our Crisis Line team conducts safety, threat, and lethality assessments, assists callers in making a safety plan, connects callers to emergency housing options such as a transition house or shelter. Whenever survivors want to involve the police we provide accompaniment and assistance in making a formal report to the police. Then we hold police accountable for following through on that report to ensure they conduct a thorough investigation.

We support survivors throughout the entire legal proceedings.

We connect survivors to BWSS life-affirming in-house services including specialized support groups, legal advocacy, trauma counselling.

The small and mighty women who started BWSS way back in 1979 enshrined in our creation story the formidable goal of ending violence against women and gender-based violence.

Very few women or girls and gender expansive people get through life without experiencing some form of gender-based violence and at BWSS we are working to change that.

Our office is based in Vancouver the unceded ancestral territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) people. Our Crisis Line extends geographically reaching callers in urban and rural communities throughout BC and beyond.
