Manager, Women’s Safety and Outreach Program

Job Summary:​ The Manager, Women’s Safety and Outreach Program is responsible for managing all aspects of Battered Women’s Support Services Downtown Eastside Vancouver community-based Woman Assault/Sexual Assault program.

Reports to:​ Executive Director

Key Duties and Responsibilities:​
The Manager will provide a women-centred and coordinated community-based response to women and girl survivors of sexual assault, dating violence, woman assault and stalking. The Manager will also work to support consistent institutional and systemic women-centered response based on promising practices to prevent violence and sexual exploitation through education awareness, outreach activities, and intervention for women and girl survivors of gender violence.

1.​ Education and Awareness Outreach – recruit, train and supervise staff and volunteers to provide orientation, information and print materials to DTES housing, medical services, other front line service, and community organizations, Specific outreach would be undertaken to increase program accessibility for women who do not access mainstream services during mainstream hours including, young women, Indigenous women, seniors, Immigrant women and women who do sex work. The program would draw on existing BWSS training program to develop and deliver of a volunteer training program to train women as Volunteer Peer Crisis Workers. As required, Battered Women’s Support Services training program would be available to provide training workshops on related practice issues.

​2. ​Mobile Crisis Response – working with staff and volunteers to provide a mobile crisis intervention to women and girl survivors of assault and/or sexual violence through assessment (safety, biopsychosocial, threat, lethality, etc), support with feelings and thoughts, support with physical impact/injuries including transportation and accompaniment to hospital, medical services, and/or sexual assault services as it relates to the collection of forensic material, transportation and accompaniment to housing (transitional, shelter etc). Response would include providing harm reduction supplies. Referrals and requests for services would be received through a dedicated mobile phone number.

3.​ Qualifications
​•​Demonstrated ability to lead operational and administrative management, planning, organizing human resources, analytical and communications.
​•​Minimum 5 years experience providing counselling, support, information and referrals to women survivors of violence. This experience has resulted in a thorough understanding of the dynamics of abuse, supportive interventions and current and emerging issues affecting survivors.
​•​Strong counselling and advocacy skills.
​•​Extensive theoretical and experiential training related to violence against women, feminist counselling and trauma counselling.
​•​Thorough understanding of the affects of vicarious trauma and effective interventions for supporting affected workers.
​•​Three to five years of progressively more responsible program management experience in feminist or community social service sector with demonstrated and in-depth working knowledge of BWSS or community based programs and services, applicable legislation and policies
​•​Good organization and time management skills.
​•​Strong conflict resolution skills and the ability to create an atmosphere of trust and support within a team of anti-violence workers
​•​Well-developed communication skills both written and verbal.
​•​Strong feminist leadership, communication and conflict resolution skills
​•​Experience working in the Downtown Eastside or comparable community required.
​•​A strong feminist analysis of violence against women which addresses the understanding of power and its interconnections among gender, race, culture, class, physical ability, sexual orientation, and age as well as all forms of oppression based on experience of colonization, religion, ethnicity and heritage.
​•​Demonstrated ability to build a strong team environment with an inclusive and collaborative approach
​•​Strong computer literacy in Word and Excel required.
​•​Regular hours 5 pm to 1 am Monday to Friday with some days and weekends
​•​Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License

4.​ Classification
​•​This position is a member of the Leadership Team

​•​Temporary full-time 40 hours weekly for 12 months
​•​Salary negotiable based on experience with full benefits including Municipal Pension Plan after successful completion of probationary period
​•​As a bona fide job requirement this position will be held by a woman
