Strategic Interventions is a social enterprise of BWSS. Revenue generated from training workshops goes toward facilitator fees and BWSS critical programs and services.
Through Strategic Interventions, we host training and events in Vancouver, across BC and in other regions of Canada with the goal of professional development for front line workers, social service providers, advocates, community organizers and managers.
November 12th • Trauma Workshop

In this one day workshop we cover a number of topics as informed by the latest neuroscience findings
- Introduction to and definitions of complex trauma
- Impact of childhood trauma on the life cycle
- How trauma impacts the brain
- How Traumatic memory is different from narrative memory
- The three stage model of recovery
- Early interventions to increase safety and stabilization
- Dissociation: tracking in and out of session
- Coping mechanisms gone awry (eg substance use, self injurious behavior)
- Transference, counter transference, vicarious traumatization and self-care capacities

In this one day workshop we will discuss topics such as how to record interactions/ sessions with clients, recent changes to the Family Law Act , ethical implications of using e technology with clients,
December 10th Art Workshop

In this one day workshop we will explore the foundational principles of using art therapy processes with those who have experienced trauma. We will cover the properties of various art materials plus introduce you to some simple activities that can be used to ground and contain women who have experienced violence.
Maureen McEvoy has been working in the field of trauma for more than 25 years. She works with individuals, couples and groups. She is a long standing instructor with the Justice Institute of BC, teaching other counsellors skills for working with survivors of child sexual abuse and other traumas. She provides clinical consultations to a number of counsellors and agencies. She has written several articles, including one co-authored with Maggie Ziegler on counter-transference in trauma groups. She recently updated the Third Edition “Balancing conflicting interests: A legal manual for counsellors” (available from the Justice Institute of BC).
