FORUM: Women’s Reproductive Justice • Affirming Our Sexual Freedom

The reproductive justice framework utilizes an intersectional analysis of women’s experiences and focuses on changing the structural inequalities that affect women’s reproductive health and their ability to control our reproductive lives. This forum is appropriate for healthcare and social service professionals with an interest in providing support around women’s reproductive rights and sexuality issues to women who have experienced gendered violence. This forum will focus on Women’s Reproductive Justice, Affirming Our Sexual Freedom from a feminist, intersectional, decolonizing practice. Participants will learn about the impacts of gendered violence on sexuality as well as will explore the structures that undergird women’s reproductive choices and sexual freedom, specifically, how these structures marginalize indigenous women, immigrant women, women with disabilities, women of color and women from other marginalized communities.
Keynote with Jessica Danforth
Jessica is the founder of the Native Youth Sexual Health Network (NYSHN) and is also the National Youth Coordinator at the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network. NYSHN is an organization by and for Indigenous youth that works across issues of sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice throughout the United States and Canada. NYSHN are resistors of violence from the state, violence on the land, and violence on bodies. Restoration of knowledge, justice, and ways to be safer in communities is critical to their work. And yes, resistance
is sexy!
Panel discussion with:
Rosa Elena Arteaga is wildly passionate about her work that is framed in a narrative, feminist intersectional practice. She is an active agent for change toward eradicating violence against girls and women. She has been the Manager of Direct Services and Clinical Practice at BWSS for the last ten years.
Priya Gill is a Criminology Honours student at Simon Fraser University and currently volunteers on the crisis and intake line at Battered Womens Support Services.
Amy Salmon has been an advocate, researcher, and service provider working with pregnant women and mothers with substance use issues for 15 years. She currently works as a Senior Research Associate at the Institute of Health Economics, and holds academic appointments at UBC and the Centre for Addictions Research-BC. Amy is also the Chair of Bonding with Babies Society’s Board of Directors.
