Battered Women’s Support Services Responds to NAP Report
Vancouver, BC – The National Action Plan (NAP) to end violence against women and gender-based violence is slated to launch Tuesday, June 22, 2021.
Since 1979, working from an intersectional, anti-oppression, and feminist framework that promotes equality for all women, BWSS has been intimately involved in providing education, advocacy, and support services to assist all women in its aim to work towards the elimination of violence.
Angela Marie MacDougall, Executive Director of BWSS, addresses the advancement, coordination, and implementation of high-quality services for women and girls across Canada.
Angela says: “Canada is at cross-roads when it comes to violence against women and gender-based violence. It’s critical Canada address all policies that may affect women’s access to services and protections within a framework that takes into account the full dimensions of BIPOC intersectionality. A deeper understanding and awareness of BIPOC intersectionality will allow us to address specific structural histories of exclusion that have affected the equal distribution of benefits.”
“Our country needs a universal, coordinated, and integrated system of support services that must be adequately funded and offered across Canada, and be accessible to all women who have experienced any form of gender-based violence.”
A unified Canada-wide service and program delivery model should include the development and implementation of service, practice standards, and guidelines for all sectors that respond to violence against women, such as health, child protection, social assistance, and housing, to name a few.
