In British Columbia, the affordable housing crisis is forcing women to make impossible choices. In 2024, we know that 200 women and children are turned away from homeless shelters every night in this province. The situation is so severe that many women, who have already survived the trauma of violence, face additional risks such as sexual violence from predatory landlords when they do manage to find housing. It’s a terrifying reality that no one should have to endure. It’s only a matter of time before we see more women and their children living in their cars.
On August 27, 2024, BWSS celebrated the development of a Second-Stage Housing Program in Vancouver, Canada. This second stage housing program symbolize a pivotal step forward in our ongoing mission to support women fleeing violence. At a time when the housing crisis exacerbates vulnerability, BWSS is proud to evolve our legacy of service by providing safe, secure housing in partnership with the Province. This initiative not only offers women and children a refuge, but also empowers them to transition from crisis to lasting independence and safety.
BWSS has long recognized the importance of stable housing for survivors of domestic violence and has been a steadfast advocate for comprehensive housing solutions that extend beyond emergency shelters and short-term transitional housing.
This crisis disproportionately impacts Indigenous, Black, newcomer, and racialized women, who find themselves most severely affected by the barriers to safe housing. We believe that it’s time for sustained investment from all levels of government and partners in both temporary and long-term housing solutions so that no victim of intimate partner and/or sexualized violence must choose between being abused or being on the streets.
Our heartfelt thanks go to our 67 donors, whose generous contributions have laid the foundation for this life-changing initiative. Your unwavering support, alongside that of our community, government representatives, and our dedicated team of volunteers, staff, and board members, created safe, affordable transitional housing where women and their children can rebuild their lives with access to our wrap-around services and advocacy.
Amid British Columbia’s affordable housing crisis, where 200 women and children are turned away from homeless shelters every night, this program could not come at a more critical time. The situation is so severe that many women, after surviving the trauma of violence, face additional risks like sexual violence from predatory landlords. It’s only a matter of time before we see more women and their children living in their cars. This terrifying reality is one that no one should have to endure.
This Fall, we will open the doors to 10 families. As we near the opening, we are finalizing our fundraising efforts to furnish these homes with thoughtful designs to foster healing and growth. We invite our community and donors to be part of this final stage by donating to the furnishing efforts and helping to create spaces where survivors can truly thrive.
Stay tuned.
We will soon announce more exciting details about the program and the official name of the housing.
Together, we are breaking down barriers and providing the safety and stability that changes lives. A safe home changes everything, and we couldn’t do this without you. Thank you for standing with us.
