“Because, the power of #MeToo isn’t just naming it. Naming it is just the beginning of the journey” -Tarana Burke

Leading up to BWSS 40 Years Later Commemoration with Tarana Burke at the Orpheum Theatre on November 25th, 2019, BWSS asked local activists to share how “Naming it is just the beginning of the journey”…

“It is absolutely true that naming how our society is deeply impacted by sexual violence is just the tip of the metaphorical iceberg. #metoo has assisted us greatly in bringing these realities into a cultural consciousness, 3 years ago I could go into a classroom to talk about sexual violence and assault and I would be asked if “that even happened anymore”. Our work now is to use the momentum of #metoo to ensure we strive to do the hard work of dismantling the systems that perpetuate this level of sexual harm, that impacts us all. Whether we are survivors or not, if we do not commit to deconstruct Rape Culture, it will continue to steal our ability to ever be our full authentic selves”.
